In order to use the PAITE effectively, observers should become proficient with all of the codes prior to making any observations. An ideal training session involves a trained facilitator who: (1) reviews the codes with trainees, (2) gives ample opportunities for trainees to practice codes using vignettes from the Inclusive Teaching Visualization Project website such as through anonymous polling, and (3) facilitates discussions on group selections until trainees achieve proficiency.
However, such facilitated training might not be feasible or available, and the self-training described below can useful when completed thoroughly. The self-training can also serve as a refresher for those who have previously used the PAITE. A training guide is also available in the appendix of the original article published on the PAITE to support usage of the tool.
A. Watch the Training Video
Make sure that you keep the PAITE webpage accessible. Watch the entire training video. Feel free to mute the music if preferred. Pause the video to complete the various activities when described. The total training time including the assessment is anticipated to take from 45 – 90 minutes but may vary.
B. Rereview the Codes
Rereview the codes until it you feel ready to practice on actual video vignettes. You will have access to the codes while observing so the most important thing is for you to learn what each of them can look like during a class observation. A few strategies for learning the codes include:
- Recalling them from memory.
- Imagining or writing down a few teaching scenarios for each of the codes.
- Reviewing the Training Guide in the appendix of the original article for examples.
C. Take the Assessment to Practice Coding
After reviewing the codes thoroughly, take the practice assessment below. Feel free to watch the vignettes multiple times before selecting answers. If you miss any questions, make note of them and identify where the discrepancies are by rewatching the vignettes. Retake the assessment until you achieve proficiency.
